Health coaching is a growing and diverse field. One of the many unique benefits of entering this profession is the flexibility to work in a variety of situations and with many people (Root, 2019). Health coaches have the opportunity to work as independent contractors and business owners or employees in a variety of environments, from local to federal. With capitalization in face-to-face, hybrid and virtual training opportunities, health coaches have a potentially unlimited scope.
Growth in health coaching
Health guidance is constantly evolving and is expected to continue to grow. Chris Gagliardi, content manager for ACE Science Education, attributes this growth to expanding research that reflects the benefits of health coaching as an internship, an increasing number of job offers, improving educational efforts, increasing public awareness and practice.
Gagliardi also notes that health coaching is "becoming an integral part of the health continuity associated with it". This factor alone holds the field in shape for the future. As a result, an increasing number of creative and unique work environments that require healthy trainers have begun to appear. According to Gagliard, some of the out-of-work settings for health coaches include pain treatment clinics, staff offices, group counseling centers, insurance companies, diabetes prevention programs and qualified care facilities.
Several of these and other environments are highlighted below. If you want to advance your health coaching career, consider exploring opportunities in one or more of these diverse and flexible work environments.
Fitness centers. Perhaps the most common and obvious environment in which a health coach can find work is in sports centers. Adopting healthy lifestyle coaching in addition to exercising is a growing trend in sports centers. Hiring health coaches allows sports centers to expand their services and offer something unique to their conditioned clients. In fact, many currently certified personal trainers add to their credentials list (Martin, 2017).
Clinical premises. As research continues to show an increasing incidence of hypokinetic diseases and conditions, there is an increasing need for specialists familiar with health guidance and behavioral changes. Medical and qualified care facilities, hospitals, clinics, diabetes prevention programs, and doctors' offices are beginning to realize the importance of including a health coach in their staff and services. Primary care providers, such as doctors and physicians, do not have the time or training to fully educate their patients on the complexities of changing health behaviors and behaviors. Instead, most of the time is spent helping patients with chronic illness versus preventing or reversing the condition (American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine, 2019). A health trainer can integrate their services into a clinical setting to bridge the gap between patient care and disease management and patient education and prevention (Bennett et al., 2010; Digate Muth, 2017).
"When it comes to non-communicable diseases, behavior change is the key to successful prevention and management, and health coaching is the best way to partner with another to collaborate on safe and effective goals set by the person looking for change," says Gagliardi. “As the health landscape changes, health coaching becomes as important as the work of all other health professionals involved. Imagine how powerful it is for all health professionals to deploy client-centered care in a team that includes health coaches and the client manages the responsibility for changing the behavior he wants to change. "
Day spas, health resorts, and cooperative and integrative health organizations. These facilities are popular places for health guidance services because they focus on holistic wellbeing and provide services that support the dimensions of physical, mental, emotional, and mental health. These opportunities are "all-inclusive" and aim to promote the balance of their clients' lifestyles – perfect for a trained health coach.
Corporate welfare organizations. The corporate welfare market has grown exponentially in recent years. For many large and small employers, it is essential to focus on "being good at work". In 2013, the US Department of Labor and the Department of Health and Human Services released a report specifying that more than 80% of companies in the United States with more than 50 employees offer some type of corporate welfare benefit.
Studies have continued to express the value of workplace well-being and its positive impact on workplace mental health, absenteeism, employee engagement and job satisfaction (Oppenheim, 2019; WELCOA, 2019; WELCOA, 2012). Health trainers are ideally placed to support this growing trend and provide the services needed to improve the health and well-being of workers across the country.
Educational institutions. According to the Centers for Disease and Prevention (CDC), obesity in children between the ages of 2 and 19 is 18.5%, affecting 13.7 million children and adolescents (CDC, 2019). In addition, children and adolescents are not the only members of the younger population who suffer from complex health problems. College students face a variety of stressors that cause ill health. These include sleep deprivation and physical activity, alcohol consumption, and general stress arising from college expectations (CDC, 2016). Health coaches are needed in a variety of school settings to help students of all ages tackle the variety of health behaviors they face in today's society.
Businesses, non-profit organizations and national / federal level organizations. Certified health trainers are considered an important partner in improving the health and well-being of the American public. We will see the addition of certified health coaching positions at companies like FitBit, American Volunteers, Jenny Craig Weight Loss Centers, Anthem, Religious Organizations and Community Health Centers.
Perhaps the biggest thing (and it requires the most thought and reasonable focus) is that a skilled health trainer has the unique ability to take advantage of the opportunities for positive change in every environment. As a result, clients feel able to design a new lifestyle that prioritizes prevention and promotes personal paths to optimal well-being.
