Lectin has recently gained tremendous attention – quickly becoming a new gluten in chronic nutrition problems and interventions. Much of the lectin fame can be attributed to Dr. Steven Gundry, a bit of a lectin expert. So before I get into the lectin story, I think it's important to give Dr. Gundry a good introduction.

Just as you thought the diet would work well for you, and thorough planning after months or even years of independent study and regular review by your fitness and nutrition counselor Steven Gundry M.D and his book The paradox of plants, adds another moving part to your sophisticated machine, which is your optimal diet.

Dr. Gundry is a former cardiac surgeon and inventor who has turned to the health mix. He is one of the most respected doctors in America and has published over 200 booked articles and topics covering heart surgery, heart disease, cholesterol and nutrition interventions.

Dr. Gundry has focused on lectin and links lectin intake directly to inflammation of the gut and the resulting disease.

The lingerie was, in a sense, his first goat pig. Despite running over 30 miles a week and going to the gym, Gundry remained 70 pounds overweight and pre-diabetic. This changed after he dealt with lectin intake in his diet.

What is Lectin?

The purpose of this article is to study the dietary intake of plant lectin. It is widely believed that plants produce lectins to control predators.

Plants such as animals strive for survival and apply safety mechanisms in the wild to prevent predators from eating them. One of the main ways to divert creation from eating them is to produce proteins called lectins, which are toxic and can paralyze insects.

Lectins are groups of protein compounds found in certain foods that bind sugar (carbohydrates). Lectins are classified as ash because they can inhibit the absorption of certain nutrients.

The amount of lectin in your diet is determined by both the diet and the way you cook and prepare certain foods.

Foods with the highest lectin content include kidney beans, refined starchy foods (such as rice and pasta), peanuts, lentils, soy products, chick peas and night drinks, to name just a few. The list of foods containing lectin is quite extensive, which makes Gungry's adherence to the "lectin diet" quite strict.

Certain foods, such as kidney beans, have very high levels of lectin in their raw form, but when properly digested and cooked, lectin levels can be dramatically reduced.

Why are lectins harmful?

Before we address the lectin critique we offer The paradox of plants, I want to outline the stated benefits of certain lectins, as the term covers a wide spectrum.

Lectins allow a component of the innate immune system called the complementary immune system, which allows the body to fight harmful pathogens (1).

Additional studies have also found that herbal lectins also have a regulatory effect on the immune system, especially in garlic formulations. (2).

Although many believe that lectins can contribute to a healthy and balanced diet. Some experts, such as Gundry, believe that partially eliminating their diets in part (except lectin reduction through certain cooking protocols) can lead to health flourishing.

Gundry himself, in a 2018 study, reported that avoiding lectin-rich foods with a diet high in polyphenols can lead to changes in endothelial dysfunction (cells that cover the inside of our blood and lymph vessels). Why is it that lectins can harm the body?

Studies have shown that lectins can inhibit digestion, limit nutrient absorption and cause serious bowel damage (4).

Underwear attributes these problems to the damage that lectins can cause at intestinal intersections. At these sites, lectins bind to a gastrointestinal molecule and form a molecule called zonulin, which breaks down the thick intersections of 1 cell that hold the tract together. The digestive tract is one cell thick to provide nutrient permeability but becomes a vulnerable structure when exposed to dense lectins.

The disintegration of these intersections causes leaking intestines, which in turn allow toxins and bacteria to enter the bloodstream and over time – which can lead to chronic inflammation and autoimmune problems.

Lectin Removal Notice

I think Gundry has created a lot of important awareness about the function of lectins in the diet and their role in the body.

However, Gundry has received much criticism from the food community for the book, mainly based on the validity of his background research on the subject in the cited scientific literature.

The proposed nutrition protocol is also incredibly restrictive and encourages the removal of many foods that have long reported health benefits, such as lentils: polyphenol-rich foods that can only reduce cardiovascular disease, obesity, cancer and diabetes in the study referred to in 2017 (5).

Night stalks, a plant family (some toxic to humans and some non-toxic), are also on the Prohibited List, but fruits such as tomatoes, which have been reported in studies, can reduce the risk of prostate cancer along with cardiovascular disease. (6).

I do not advocate the rapid elimination of lectins completely from my own or clients' diets, but sensitivity to lectins is different from humans, and it may certainly be beneficial for some to exclude lectins completely from their diet if they experience lectin-induced bowel problems. But this is a big IF. Before making such bold changes, it is important to first test and examine your current state of health and nutrition.

At this stage, the message to the public, derived from both this article and Gundry's work, is to be aware of the role of lectins in diet and manage their own consumption and cooking accordingly. It guarantees you limit the amount of lectins in your diet.

If you have symptoms of inflammation of the gut, it is advisable to seek medical attention, which may remove and slowly reintroduce lectin-containing foods from your diet to determine if the lectins are causing the problems.
